Exploring Venice

The travel to Italy.

We traveled from home to Italy with Venice as our end point of travel. This was also our starting point for our multi-city travel across Italy. It was mid-afternoon when we landed at Venezia Airport. Our Gate 1 Travel representative was already waiting for us. We joined her group of travelers as she led us to the back of the airport. The last leg of our travel was a water taxi (speed boat) ride to the island of Venice, Italy.

Hotel Principe and the walk to St. Mark Square.

Hotel Principe was right along Grand Canal and facing Rio Terá Lista di Spagna, the main walking street. Stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia, the train station, was 300 meters west of the main walking street. The east side of the main walking street meandered all the way to Rialto Bridge. From Rialto Bridge, we walked the smaller streets until we reached St. Mark Square.

Palazzo Labia
San Geremia Church

Along the way, we browsing through shops and observing the ongoing night life of Venice. We were also appreciating the Venetian gothic design of the buildings in Venice.

Gelateria Artigiana
Cannaregio Canal

St. Mark Square.

The night drove away most people from Piazza San Marco (St. Mark Square). It was almost deserted, almost. The surrounding buildings were brightly lit. There was enough illumination to allow visualization of the whole square. St. Mark’s Basilica and the bell tower were at the far end of the square. Except for the scaffoldings, the sight of the Basilica and the bell tower were magnificent.

Grand Canal in front of Sta. Lucia Train Station

It was a slow walk back to Rialto Bridge. The water bus ride from Rialto terminal to Ferrovia terminal offered another perspective of life in Venice. There was so much to see. The Ferrovia water bus station was right in front of the Venice Santa Lucia train station. We lingered for a while before heading back to Hotel Principe and called it a night.

  1. We didn’t spend too much time wandering around Venice at night when we were there this summer so it’s nice to see what we were missing through your pictures. It doesn’t look nearly as crowded as during the middle of the day.

    • The crowd was thin that night. Plus, it’s the start of winter and the tour guides said that the crowd was nothing compared to the peak summer season.
