Laurel Falls

Laurel Falls was our destination for the day. We woke up before sunrise. Getting to the trailhead early was important to avoid the crowd. The trail to the falls accordingly became so popular that it was paved. It still draws a crowd despite its classification as moderately difficult. We didn’t want to hike a crowded trail. Luckily, everybody was ready in no time at all.

The trailhead was easy enough to find. It was only approximately five miles from our hotel and didn’t require a long drive. On the way, we noticed the big roadside Smoky Mountain National Park sign. We missed a good photo opportunity but we will be back for that sign! The parking lot was almost full when we reached it. We found a parking spot immediately across the trailhead. The thought crossed our minds that we should have come even earlier.

Going up Laurel Falls trail

The hike up to Laurel Falls was relatively easy at a slow pace. It did bring back memories of our attempt to hike the perimeter trail at Ouray, Colorado. None of us were hard core hikers. Although we keep relatively active, we still need to build up stamina if we want to hike more difficult trails. The plan was to reach Laurel Falls. After that, there was an option to go farther and reach Cove Mountain Lookout Tower. The trail past the falls was supposedly through old growth forest and continues with its steep ascent. Unless obstructed by the tree foliage, the surrounding mountains can be viewed during this part of the hike. We didn’t quite make it all the way to the tower.

Trees, brush, and flowers.

Springtime was evident along the trail. The trees were green as well as the underbrush and other vegetation. Flowers were everywhere! There were a few areas along the trail that allowed for rest (and pictorials). We took the opportunity to soak in the sight, sound, and feel of the mountain trail.

There was already a sizable crowd when we reached the falls. Everybody were posing for selfies and groupies. The crowd were arriving and leaving the falls area but saw no one going farther. We decided to go farther but, as I said, we didn’t quite make it all the way.
