Lombard Street, San Francisco

Lombard Street runs in an east-west direction. Personally, I am considering the Golden Gate Bridge as the eastern portion and The Embarcadero as the western portion. One winding block of the street remains a very popular tourist destination. We made it as one of our destinations after we spent time at Muir Woods. We had to see a very popular tourist destination that had been featured in a lot of movies. At one silly point, I even imagined that all of San Francisco looked like Lombard Street!

It was not all winding streets at all. Rather, the street followed the rolling hill pattern of the terrain and required masterful driving skills. The steep upgrades reached crests with limited visibility to oncoming traffic. The downgrades, just as steep, required good control of a potentially runaway vehicle.

The photo above was not the famous winding street. It was the western direction of the street. I have read several times in photography that it is always good practice to check the view on the opposite side. I did. What I saw was the rolling hill pattern of the street and a prominent landmark. Coit tower was a prominent landmark and its history was even more interesting. I think the unique random pattern of the pastel colored buildings on the west also deserve equal attention.
