There are six states that comprise New England. Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. History has shown that the New England states had a prominent role in the development of the USA. Fall foliage, otherwise known as autumn leaf colors, is also a popular seasonal occurrence to observe in the area.
Autumn leaves begin to change color between the months of September to October in the northern hemisphere. The timing of our visit was to take full advantage of peak autumn leaf color change. We began to worry that a passing storm was affecting the autumn colors. The heavy rain and dropping temperature were rapidly changing the leaf colors. It was stripping the leaves off of the trees.
We were feeling lucky seeing most trees in the states of Vermont and New Hampshire retaining its autumn leaves and color. Spending our days outdoors and enjoying the brilliant autumn colors immediately became a priority. The effect of the storm was evident in some areas. The higher altitude and latitude of the northern areas was quickly taking on a deep winter appearance.
Just like in San Francisco, we took time visiting the parks and hiking the trails. We were wise enough to pick the short and easy trails. The ground was damp and mushy from the rain but the paved portions made hiking it manageable. Different autumn colors, enhanced by the rain, were surrounding us as we walked along.
The weather forecast was showing several successive days of sunshine and cool temperatures. We were rejoicing with this development and continued to plan with our outdoor activities. Adaptability was something that we learned through our travels. We can only plan but perfect outcome was something that was difficult to achieve. For this travel, we were just thankful to be given the chance to experience a New England autumn leaf color change.
