Coastal town photos: The Singing Beach

The Singing Beach at Manchester-by-the-sea was our third stop for the day along the east coast. Our stop-over at Gloucester was reinvigorating enough to prod us on with our travel. It was exciting to think that we will be seeing the namesake town of the award-winning movie, Manchester-by-the-sea.

The Singing Beach was listed as one of the places to see at Manchester-by-the-sea. The story was that the sand on the beach made a squeaking sound when nannies used to walk their wards on the beach with their leather shoes hence the name. The beach became more popular over time and now has a lot of regulations just to be on the beach. We found a sign posted for an expensive parking fee for non-residents. There was also a fee just to walk the beach. Luckily, we were there during off-season and there was no need to pay the fees. There were a lot of people walking the beach with their dogs that day. It was disappointing though that we didn’t hear the squeaking sound when we walked the beach.

There was little time to linger since we still had to drive back to Boston. We left before the sun was close to setting. Rhode Island was next in the travel itinerary.
