Marken – fishing town, wooden houses, and wooden clogs

Marken was located east of Amsterdam at Markermeer (Marker Lake). It was our last destination for our bus tour around Amsterdam. We were carrying our yellow bags filled with cheese from Volendam as we boarded the ferry to take us across the island.

It was a short ferry ride. Marken was just east of Volendam. We were watching the boats lining the wharf and the wooden houses as the ferry got closer. It really did look like a fishing town. The tour guide walked us through the narrow streets of the town and eventually led us to a a street facing the water and lined with various shops.

Shops and businesses in similar-looking wooden houses were lining all the narrow streets. It was definitely life in a small town. A small restaurant provided us a break from all the walking and a light lunch. The wall decor of the restaurant looked very interesting with paintings and items depicting its fishing history. It was much like eating a meal in one of the small restaurants in a farming town and having farming-related decor on the walls.

It was a visit to the Wooden Shoe Factory after lunch. A souvenir shop in Marken that specialized in making wooden clogs. Souvenirs were available for purchase in this shop after we watched a demonstration of wooden clog making.
