Images of cold, rainy nights

A storm front came through this week and brought rain with it. The cold, windy, and dry winter became cold, windy, and wet. The gloomy sky during the day and the intermittent rain made everything dull and gray. The darkness of night though brought something different. Images of cold, rainy nights. Glistening, wet surfaces reflected the colors of the night lights and created interesting images.

Driving home from work, I was thinking, “What a drab sight!” A long stretch of road with nary a variation of color aside from the whiteness of the street lamps and the gray/black color of darkness! Then I remembered the vast parking lot and playing fields around one street corner. Instinctively, I made the turn and ended up in the middle of a deserted parking lot.

There in the middle of the empty parking, I stood. I looked around and sank in the emptiness and the darkness. Slowly, the colors of the night came out. The bluish hue of the street lamp, the reddish glow of the tungsten lamp, the reflected and darkened colors of the wet surfaces, and the gray/black transition of the unlighted areas.

The haze of the drizzle and fog also added to ambiance. Eerie, I would say, but also mysterious. Images of cold, rainy nights. I should spend more nights like this.
