La Giralda

Cathedral of Seville: one of the largest Gothic Catholic Church

The Cathedral of Seville, its popular name, is the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See. As mentioned, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site along with the adjoining La Giralda, Alcazar palace complex, and the General Archive of the Indies.

The Cathedral of Seville was once the Great Mosque of Seville. Its “Christianization” happened when Ferdinand III conquered Seville. The conquest ended Muslim rule. The conversion of the Mosque to a Cathedral created one of the largest Gothic Catholic church.

We were excitedly disembarking the bus after touring Plaza de España. We were not the only tour group disembarking. There were several ahead of us. We had to stand in line waiting for our turn to enter the Cathedral.

We were facing La Giralda as we were standing in line. We took a few snaps of photographs. So did a lot of other people. It was amazing to think that La Giralda was once a minaret of the Great Mosque of Seville. The addition of the bell tower was necessary for converting the Mosque to a Cathedral.

We cleared the ticket line. We then were ushering ourselves to the Court of the Oranges. The Court of the Oranges used to be the Ablutions Courtyard of the Grand Mosque. We will be entering the Cathedral though the north-facing Door of the Conception. It was the vast expanse of the Cathedral after passing through the Door of the Conception.
