Kite flying at the park

The view of kite flying at Bondi beach in Australia left me in awe with the sight.  The kites were fancy and colorful.  It flowed with the breeze and had a graceful, undulating movement.  That was the first time I saw giant kites up close.

The experience became etched in my mind and I left Bondi beach hoping to be back again.  I wanted to spend more time by Bondi beach.  Just watch the people and hopefully watch the kites fly again.

A few days ago, I was browsing through my social media webpage and I came across an announcement about a local cub scout pack.  They were going to have a kite flying activity at a park nearby.  Curious, I decided to go and watch it.  What I saw were families gathered together and trying to launch kites in the air.  There was an open-air cub scout tent nearby where some adults were helping kids assemble their kites.

I remember my two boys were in cub scouting.  I joined them and we participated in most activities which were fun and interesting.

I was never good at kite making.  My childhood friends built kites from flexible bamboo sticks and scraps of old newspaper and it flew like precision machines.  I built my kites and the first thing it did was dive to the ground after launch.  I was never good at flying kites either.  Each time that I attempted to launch a kite only ended in failure.

Watching the kites flying at the park had me chuckling at how many times I failed.  I can remember vividly the first time I flew a kite.

One summer afternoon, I decided to build a kite for a kid and go kite flying at a nearby field.  The wind blew just right, caught the kite in one of its gusts, and had it soaring up in the sky effortlessly.  The kite soared and swayed so gracefully that it looked like it could go on flying forever.  I never felt so elated.

I processed the same kind of emotion as I was watching the kids fly their kites.   I felt like it was me all over again flying my kite for the first time.  The look of joy on their faces was priceless.

I silently thank the kids for making me feel like a kid again.  I went back to my adult life and still hope that I could go back to Bondi beach to watch the giant kites fly.
