Destination vacation

I eagerly await the coming of summer vacation. The time when we get off work, head to a planned destination, do nothing, and enjoy most of everything.  Planning and preparation are key since we all know that it takes good planning and preparation to have an enjoyable vacation.  Supplies are bought and accommodation booked but I am still restless that I may have forgotten something.  Time seems to move very slowly and excitement builds up as we approach the anticipated date.  The day finally comes.

This year is special for me.  First, we are spending this vacation with five other families.  Spending time together is not something new for us as we have been together for a number of years now and we have watched each other’s family grow.  What is different this year is that some more of the children graduate from high school and will be going off to college soon.  That is one more child out of the household – an achievement but also a thing of sorrow as there will be one less child in the home.  Second, I actually do look forward to this summer vacation.  I used to think that summer vacation is just another reason to be off work but now I feel that I really do need this vacation to unwind and rejuvenate. I really hope that I will achieve this and be feeling fresh going back to work.  Third, my family will be gathered together again and we have one special child joining us.  A bubble of joy and an apple to everyone’s eyes.  What started as one weak child at birth is now a blur of constant motion – a toddler.  We watched this child come to this world, struggle to survive, and eventually went home. We watched this child grow and develop, fussed over all the little details on how to care and nurture, argued about conflicting opinions, and just be joyful that this child has joined the family!   We welcome this child as a treasure and we hold high hopes that this child will represent the next generation in the family.

packed bags

So the bags are packed and we are almost ready to go!  It will be a long road trip but we have more drivers now and we can easily alternate driving.  The moms have done the planning, the dads have done the loading, and the kids had been cajoled to be responsible for their belongings. Let’s start making memories!
