First Visit to Melbourne

The flight to Melbourne

We arrived at Melbourne after a long plane flight from Houston, Texas.  There was a short stop at Auckland, New Zealand. We only stayed within the airport to wait for the connecting flight.  It was a relief that we were able to walk around and stretch our limbs.  The Houston to Auckland flight with Air New Zealand wasn’t so bad as we were able to book our seats ahead of time.  My wife and I sat next to each other in a two-seat row.

The connecting flight

Waiting for the connecting flight didn’t take very long.  It was just long enough to stretch, have something to eat and then relax.  During the wait, my wife and I started talking and wondering why we didn’t plan for a few days stop at New Zealand.  Maybe it will be a good idea next time to explore New Zealand.

It was bright and sunny in Melbourne.  It was good to be out of the plane and walking on land again. The welcoming committee – Bee, my sister, and friend, Bernie – were waiting for us as we made our way out of the airport.

Sightseeing was priority and the latticed roadway architecture on the road going to Dandenong was already eye-catching! People probably take this sight for granted as they see it all the time but I see it as amazing and pleasing to the eye.  The Melbourne skyline was also visible from the freeway but it was quite difficult to get a good view from a moving vehicle.

Dandenong square

Dandenong Square

The suburb community where we were staying was quiet and pleasant. There were rows of houses and then there was Dandenong square – one of the hubs of community activity.  Shops lined the square and people of all ages mingled.  The shops were selling enough goods to satisfy our household needs. It was impressing to note the diversity of ethnicity of people in the square. I found the experience unique.
